The Office of Student Affairs exists for the purpose of
enhancing the quality of student life by creating an environment that will support student
academic, physical, emotional, and social development while challenging them to develop
their abilities to the fullest.
Committed to this idea, the office complements the
instructional program by providing services that help the students to enter, enjoy, excel,
and exit from EVMS. Students are offered opportunities to develop their basic academic
skills, to expand their interpersonal leadership and career related skills, and to obtain
support services designed to help them cope with educational, personal, health, and social
problems.
The goals of the Office of Students Affairs are:
Creating Access. To
remove barriers and provide services to enable students to maximize their use of the
learning environment of EVMS. Particular emphasis is to be placed on the special needs of
women, minority, and non-traditional students, and of students in need of financial
assistance.
Academic Support and Enhancement.
To remove barriers and to enhance chances for students' success by creating linkages with
faculty, providing developmental studies for students with strategic weaknesses in
academic skills, acting as a resource for faculty, creating support systems for students
for academic success, and managing the orientation and retention of students.
Performance/Efficiency.
To improve the effectiveness and efficiency of services by providing staff development and
training, conducting program evaluation, linking resources, integrating individuals and
technology, and adhering to high standards for providing service to our students.
Career Planning. To
assist students in making satisfactory choices about future careers.
Health Maintenance. To
meet immediate needs of curing illness, to overcome stereotype role restrictions, and to
provide health education designed to increase awareness of self health techniques,
including physical and mental health, human sexuality, and stress management.
Social/Interpersonal. To
provide opportunities for the development of student social skills and successful
interaction with other individuals and groups.
Cultural Diversity and Social
Responsibility. To provide opportunities for interactions among individuals of
different cultures and backgrounds in order to develop interpersonal skills and an
appreciation for each other's culture.
Crisis Resolution. To
respond to emotional, physical, financial, and academic concerns that demand immediate
intervention.
Cultural/Recreation. To
provide experiential opportunities for enjoyment, reduction of tension, and broadening
cultural experiences.
Quality of Work Life. To
create and sustain working environments which enhance staff performance and productivity,
emotional and physical health, and professional commitment to EVMS and the Office of
Student Affairs.
