New Automatic Vehicle Identification
Parking System
The partners of the Eastern Virginia
Medical Center (EVMC) Parking Consortium — Children’s Hospital of The
King’s Daughters, Sentara, Eastern Virginia Medical School and the
Norfolk Department of Public Health — are excited to introduce the new
Hands-Free Access System that will allow authorized parkers to enter
and exit the EVMC Parking facilities with expedience and convenience.
Visitors and patients will enjoy additional benefits, too.
With this new system, authorized
parkers will be able to enter and exit all lots, without searching for
their parking card, taking a ticket or even rolling down a window. Once
an Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) tag or license plate
transponder is properly installed, they will be able to drive up to the
gate slowly and it will open automatically. It is as simple as that!
Visitors and Patients
Visitors and patients to the medical
center visitor lots, the main garage in the middle of the medical
center and the surface lot adjacent to Hofheimer Hall must continue to
take a ticket on entry that must be presented on exit to calculate
payment. One of the new benefits will be the installation of credit
processing equipment at the exit booths so that you may use a credit or
check card for payment. Cash and checks are already accepted. Visitor
payment options also include discounted prepaid parking cards and
coupons that can significantly reduce cost for a family with a loved
one requiring extended care at one of the partner institutions.
A new amenities area is being
established in the main visitor garage for all parkers. It will include
a courtesy phone for local calls, maps of medical center facilities,
informational brochures and vending machines.
Security
Security has already been upgraded to
include coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in both the visitor and
staff garages by EVMS Security. Several hundred cameras are installed
throughout the garages and buildings that are monitored by the EVMS
Security staff in order to improve responsiveness. Emergency services
such as battery jumps, key retrieval assistance, tire inflation, and
car location are provided on demand. Authorized parkers in the garages
and staff lots are required to bear an ID from one of the partner
institutions.
Safety of both pedestrians and drivers
is of paramount concern in the medical center. Additional crosswalks
have been installed to improve pedestrian traffic flow. New city signs
mark streets with larger STOP, ONE-WAY and DO NOT ENTER signs. The City of
Norfolk also has installed a new crossing light at Colley and Olney
that shows pedestrians how many seconds remain before a light change.
All the private signs in the garages will be upgraded by summer with
larger and brighter information and directions. There is hope for a
very large digital sign installation as you enter the medical center,
providing up-to-date parking information on availability, special
events, and detours. Speed limit, special parking and caution signs and
speed bumps are being installed throughout the campus to reduce the
risk to the 15,000 vehicles and pedestrians that visit the medical
center daily.
