The faculty participate in the training of Ph.D. graduate students in the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program by providing graduate-level courses and as mentors of graduate students. The Department also offers gifted high school, college and medical students the opportunity to perform basic and translational research studies during the summer. The research programs performed in the Department are focused primarily in two areas: cancer and virology. These broad areas include neurovirology, immunology, proteomics, nucleic acid chemistry and molecular aspects of AIDS. The Department houses two important translational research centers: The Virginia Prostate Center and The George L. Wright, Jr. Center for Biomedical Proteomics. Research programs are funded by numerous external agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, private foundations and industry. This research environment provides a challenging and inspiring environment for graduate and postgraduate students interested in tumor biology, cellular immunology, virology and molecular biology. By the same token, graduate students and postgraduate fellows make a vital contribution to the continuing success of the Department's research programs. The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology is located on the third floor of Lewis Hall, the main teaching and research facility of the EVMS campus.
