Introduction
The General Surgery Residency Program is an accredited five-year
program primarily designed to educate competent clinical surgeons for a career in the
practice of general surgery. The program offers progressive and supervised education in
the art and science of Surgery. Upon completion of the residency, the surgeon will be
competent to practice independently and will be eligible to sit for the examinations of
the American Board of Surgery. Candidates may enter the program immediately after graduation from
medical school.
General Description
The program is under the directorship of the Chairman of
the Department of Surgery, Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Directors of
Surgery in each of the participating hospitals. These include Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Children's Hospital of The King's
Daughters, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, and Sentara Bayside Hospital.
There are 25 positions available in the program that
include eight in the first year, four in the second year, four in the third year, and four in
the fourth and fifth years. The reduction in numbers between the second and third is
accommodated by the transfer of preliminary residents into surgical specialty programs.
There is also one resident selected for the research year between the
second and third years of training.
Curriculum
The five-year program is divided into
two components. In the first segment of the educational program, clinical rotations are designed to
provide an understanding of the principles of medicine and surgery, development of clinical and surgical skills, and application of basic science
principles. The remaining years, culminating in the Chief Residency, provide educational
and clinical experience in vascular, pediatric, head and neck, multiple trauma, thoracic,
and oncology surgery, as well as general surgery.
The surgery program provides a structured and
progressively graded clinical experience, allowing the resident to mature in competence as
he/she advances through the stages of clinical responsibility. The program provides personal
teaching and supervision by Board-certified surgeons in all aspects of
training and education. The program combines a wealth of clinical experiences as
well as didactic and instructional sessions.
The teaching program includes Grand Rounds on Friday
mornings, Visiting
Professors, a monthly journal club, morbidity/mortality conferences, and pre-operative surgical case
reviews.
Fellowships are available annually in vascular surgery
and in trauma/critical care. Active research programs are carried out within the Eastern
Virginia Medical School and its affiliated hospitals. Residents are encouraged to
participate in research and clinical investigation studies throughout their educational
program. In the last three years of the program, residents must complete an annual basic
science research project or a clinical investigation study.
