The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School offers an accredited three- year program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Family Medicine. The department has two training programs - one university-based and one community-based. Each program has 18 positions, six in each of the three years. The university-based program at Ghent Family Medicine was established in 1974, and is housed in a 14,000-square-foot clinical facility located in Fairfax Hall on the main medical school campus. The community-based program at Portsmouth Family Medicine, established in 1977, is housed in a free-standing facility just across the river - five minutes from the main medical campus. Training at these centers and at community and tertiary medical facilities gives our residents a unique blend of clinical experience. Curriculum Specific curriculum programs vary between Ghent Family Medicine and Portsmouth Family Medicine residency programs. See those areas of the site for specific information.
