The Department of Dermatology at Eastern Virginia Medical School is committed to supporting the mission of the medical school:

• to provide excellence in education;
• to provide clinical service to the community; and
• to advance knowledge through research.

The Department includes four full-time faculty members and many active community faculty members.

Educational Programs

Medical School

The Department actively participates in the undergraduate educational programs for both medical students and physician assistants. This includes involvement in core courses such as histology, clinical skills, and pathology. Elective clerkships in clinical dermatology, dermatopathology and dermatologic research are offered.

Residency Education

The Department sponsors an ACGME-approved Dermatology residency training program and is involved in teaching Dermatology to primary care residents at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Postgraduate Education

Community physicians are invited to participate in continuing medical education in dermatology via grand rounds, guest lectureships, and a monthly journal club.

Clinical Services

Patient Care

Dermatologic services are provided for patients at the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Westminster Canterbury (a retirement community) and Pariser Dermatology Specialists, Inc.

Dermatology Grand Rounds

Patients with complex disease and diagnostic or therapeutic challenges are referred for evaluation to the Dermatology Grand Rounds that is attended by students, residents, community physicians and faculty members.

Dermatopathology Division

A full-service dermatopathology unit, including a laboratory, is located in Lewis Hall for the evaluation of routine diagnostic specimens, consultations, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence.

Research

Members of the Department of Dermatology actively collaborate with investigators at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Old Dominion University to answer questions about the biology of the skin and the process of diagnosis. Clinical trials are conducted at Virginia Clinical Research, Inc. under the direction of Drs. David and Robert Pariser and at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, directed by Dr. Judith Williams.
