The Great American
Smokeout: Why?
November 19, 2008
NORFOLK, VA — It’s a fact: all cancers caused by cigarette smoking
could be prevented completely.
On Thursday, November 20, 2008, the American Cancer Society will urge
all Americans using tobacco to stop using for the day and become aware
of the many support methods available to help stay quit for good. Maybe
you have family members who have asked you to quit. Maybe you have tried
to quit before without success. Why try again? Because now you can
double your chances of quitting tobacco.
By using at least one of the ways listed below for your quit attempt,
you can double the chances of being successful. By using more than one
of the ideas listed below, you double your chances of staying quit for
good!
- Self-help materials like the “Get
Off Your Butt” CD and workbook available from
the Occupational Health
Department.
- Support programs like group
smoking cessation programs offered in the community.
- Nicotine replacement therapy,
which can relieve many of the nicotine withdrawal symptoms that
occur when a person stops smoking. Your doctor can prescribe the
medication right for you.
If you are interested in quitting for a day (or more) and would like a
“Quit Kit”, or if you would like more information on the Tobacco Free
Campus beginning January 1, 2008, contact the Occupational Health
Department at 446-5870. |
